Only What's Done for Christ Will Last
Luann Budd
When Kevin and I headed off to seminary in our early twenties, a godly elderly couple, living in a small apartment on a fixed income, took it upon themselves to pray for us, send coupons to help us save on groceries, and monthly, they mailed us a check. We never asked for support; they just sent it. Their love made tangible. No one else knew. In giving to us, they believed, they were giving to Christ. What a blessing they were.
Often Beryl would say, "Only one life 'twill soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last" (CT Studd 1860-1930). The rhythm sounded too sing-song for my taste, but it has stuck with me over the decades.
"Only one life 'twill soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last." Life is brief; invest wisely. What we do for Jesus lasts—it's valued and rewarded if it's done because we love (1 Corinthians 3:10-15; 13:1-13).
As we embark on another year, may we give our lives to the work of Christ. "Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us..."
