Pondering the Mystery
Luann Budd
Can Niagara Falls be contained in a teacup?
Can Einstein's theories be explained to a littleneck clam?
Impossible! Yet our Creator became a baby.
Advent for me is a time for pondering the tremendous mystery of the incarnation. The Source of all life takes on human flesh, develops in Mary’s womb, and is born a Jewish baby. How can this be?
We know the Christmas story. If you are like me, it’s easy to get preoccupied with the preparations and never marvel at the mystery.
Advent is a time for letting our hearts be stirred. We want to feel the enormity of the gift. It is a treasure of incomprehensible value. We want to be brought to tears by the Lord’s generosity. He gives us his Son. We are the reason for his journey!
Purest. Most Sublime. Majestic. All-Glorious. Loveliest. Almighty God. Him who dwells in unapproachable light, him who no eye can see, him whom the angels adore, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings, comes to us (I Tim. 6:16). He enters our world. He arrives—a newborn baby.
“When God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him’” (Heb. 1:6). As we wait for Christmas morning, let’s plan some time to pause throughout December to be still before the Lord. Let's contemplate the mystery so that we might join the angels in heartfelt praise and adoration. "Glory to God in the highest!"
